The only thing Texans love more than beef is when it’s ground, seasoned, and seared on a flattop. From pitmaster-perfected smoked renditions to tamale-topped Tex-Mex interpretations, the October 2024 issue of Texas Highways offers 50 Burgers Worth the Drive. Curated by features editor Chris Hughes and writers Ali Khan, Amanda Albee, Amy McCarthy, and Matthew Odam, these burger joints will make you want to eat across the state. In “The Fearless Cowgirls of Mexican Rodeo,” photographer Constance Jaeggi travels across the state capturing the women who compete in escaramuza charra, the only women’s equestrian event in charrería, the national sport of Mexico. Her work is part of an exhibition at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth. Author and illustrator Edward Carey explores the nature and lore of Caddo Lake in “Certain Uncertain.” As he tells the backstory on the East Texas lake, he writes tales about fanciful mythical creatures he imagines roam the waters. The rest of the issue features an interview with author Attica Locke, a look at a Texas Chain Saw Massacre-inspired restaurant, and dives into the history of Natural Bridge Caverns.
