An annual reader favorite, our August issue is dedicated to the tightknit communities that make up the state’s small towns. This year’s list of Small Towns to Visit Now includes a two-stepping Hill Country ghost town, a history-rich East Texas burg, and a Rio Grande Valley standout.
In keeping with our exploration of small town life, this issue contains the magazine’s first collection of short fiction. Deputy editor Mike Hoinski and guest editor S. Kirk Walsh approached six Texas authors about writing exclusive stories set in small towns both real and imagined. The six writers represent a cross section of the state’s increasingly diverse storytellers. “Today’s Texas canon is more inclusive and expansive, with many different writers chiming in on the Texas experience,” Walsh says. “It’s an exciting time to be both a writer and a reader here in Texas.”
Forty years after the debut of "Tender Mercies," Wes Ferguson revisits the classic film that put Waxahachie on the map. The Oscar-winning picture, starring Robert Duvall, turned what was once a small farming community into a Hollywood film hub.
