For this year’s regional issue, we turn our focus to El Paso. We called upon El Paso local and enthusiast Roberto José Andrade Franco to guest edit the issue, and many of the contributing writers and photographers are also from the region. Elsewhere in the magazine, the late writer Benjamin Alire Sáenz details the city that raised him in “My Finest Mentor.” Sáenz died at 71 on July 28 while finishing the essay, and his irresistible love for his craft and his city reverberates in his last written piece. We also hear from El Paso-raised astronaut Danny Olivas, who completed two space shuttle missions throughout his career. And we get a peek at a working pipe organ from 1930 that haunts Digital Editor Chris O’Connell as it’s played throughout El Paso’s Plaza Theatre. We aimed to portray as much of what El Paso offers as possible, from restaurants that serve lesser-known Mexican liquors to a historic cemetery that exists where a largely forgotten community once stood. We hope this issue will guide you to a new reason to love Texas’ sixth-largest city.
